FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) released 28 new Public Assistance Independent Study courses that enhance the capacity of communities to achieve their immediate and long-term recovery goals. Course content covers the Public Assistance Program and delivery process, including general concepts, such as documenting disaster damage and orientation to the Public Assistance delivery model. The new course content also includes specialized topics, such as bridge damage, roads and culverts, electrical systems, and grant decisions for tribal governments.
These online courses will also help applicants to navigate the grant process. They are designed for state, local, tribal and territorial (SLTT) government personnel and elected and appointed officials. The information provided in the courses will also benefit Public Assistance recipients, emergency management supervisory, operations and support personnel, nonprofit organizations, and other Public Assistance stakeholders.

On Friday, Peter T. Gaynor began serving as FEMA’s Acting Administrator. Gaynor began as FEMA’s Deputy Administrator in October 2018. Prior to serving as deputy administrator, he was Director of Rhode Island’s Emergency Management Agency, where he advised the governor on emergency management policy and was the principal liaison between FEMA and local emergency management offices throughout Rhode Island.
Prior to Gaynor’s 10 years of extensive emergency management experience, he served for 26 years in the United States Marine Corps.

SAFER Grant Application Period Ends March 22
The 2018 SAFER application period will close on Friday, March 22 at 5 p.m. ET. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, “front line” firefighters available in their communities.

Application Period ends on March 31 for Youth Preparedness Council
All applications and supporting materials for the Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. PST, March 31. The YPC brings teens together from across the country who are interested and engaged in community preparedness. Council members are selected based on their dedication to public service, their efforts in making a difference in their communities and their potential to expand their impact as national leaders for emergency preparedness. Students in 8th through 11th grade are eligible to apply.
